Mystik Mega Opus – Behold the “Believer”

Mystik - Believer

Mystik has completed a large production project that started as an experiment and ended as a proof of concept with tangible and very positive results. Behold Mystik – Believer. A full hour-plus long house and techno dance electronica set written from scratch in one continuous project.

The idea began with the concept of starting to write a custom built, new set, composed from scratch…all in one DAW project. I chose Ableton Live for this experiment due to it’s extremely flexible time-stretching and warping; since I was exploring a bunch of new sample banks, this helped greatly as the tempo of multiple samples could be adjusted more easily, by default.

The process necessarily spanned several sessions and defined a certain workflow unto itself. That being of adaptation. The time-honored tradition of keeping sounds to their own tracks basically “flew out the window”. Tracks became multi functional with individual clip envelopes or automations or other volume adjustments or the like all mixed up on the same track for multiple sound effects…generally separated by track section at least.

As a result, the mix does contain identifiable concepts and sections, while being entirely mixed together in multitrack fashion, weaving elements between each “song” or keyed section. I’ve setup various groups for the submixes and wasn’t exactly limiting track count, except to keep the project manageable and not too unweildy.

I do have had plans to develop some of the groovier sections into their own full separate tracks. Work has begun on that process, albeit slowly so far. Time will tell! LMK if you want me to work on this more or not or what are your favorite sections? Send me some feedback!

This set is also available in another playlist on the Live Performance & DJ page with more other music!
